Haute Cakes: Part IIII of a Grand Rapids Body Positive Event Series
We laughed, we cried,
(one of us sang) and,
WE ATE CAKE.
Lights, Camera, ASSASSIN!
We’ve all noticed a lack of diversity in most runway shows and Haute Cakes mission was to highlight this huge miss in the fashion world. This time around BOPO maven Latesha Lipscomb hosted a body-inclusive fashion show to prove that there isn't a "one-size-fits-all image of beauty."
There was fur, flowers, glitz and glamour galore at Sunday’s body positivity event and every single woman in that room looked truly stunning in confidence.
The show was meant to celebrate women, instead of serving up "aspirations" that no one can really relate to.
Real women, with real bodies came to strut their stuff on our runway. Here are a few snaps from our time together:
Some girls brought friends, some came solo and made new ones. They showed up in their favorite beach wear or summer attire and celebrated EVERY BODY. Women of all shapes and sizes who are body positive or working their way there. It was a day party for divas, local leading ladies, single moms, shy girls, fashion assassins and any woman who needed to be reminded of her own unique beauty!
Self-love isn’t always the easiest, but sometimes, it’s important to look at yourself in the mirror and just be thankful for one thing you really love about you. Me? I love my squinty, all gums smile. Some years ago I was incredibly self conscious about smiling too big, but now I’ve learned to be happy with who I am and truly believe my squint eyed smile is completely unique to me.

Because although we are occasionally outspoken and often brave, sometimes we need the stiff hand of a righteous Bettie to pull us through our self-sabotaging shit. *Quietly raises hand* We are perfectly flawed and have created this community for our friends, acquaintances and companions. For love, because always for love. This is a place for women to discuss, and find support, re body positivity and female empowerment.
